Behavioral Health and Health Counseling
Purpose of the Series
The American Psychological Association Psychotherapy
Videotape Series III presents distinguished psychotherapists of
different theoretical orientations demonstrating treatments for
specific health problems.
Hosted by Jon Carlson, these videos feature real
people participating in actual psychotherapy sessions with expert
therapists in the field of behavioral health.
Each video in the series is divided into three
segments and presented in a practical, informative, and entertaining
format. The featured topic is introduced in a provocative discussion
between the host, Dr. Carlson, and the leading therapist in the field
about the major theories in behavioral health. This discussion is
followed by an actual therapy session, with the featured therapist
demonstrating how to apply behavioral health principles. The final
segment is a lively question-and-answer exchange between Dr. Carlson
and the featured therapist reviewing the session and explaining how the
theories were put into practice in the session. Each video runs more
than 100 minutes.
Designed for clinical training and continuing
education, these videos were created to assist psychology students and
professionals in gaining insight and knowledge into how to work with
patients who have behavioral health issues. Some of the anticipated
uses include:
- learning how experienced practitioners treat clients with various behavioral health problems,
- concretely illustrating theoretical concepts in health psychology in practice,
- gaining a first-hand look at what happens in a real live session,
- comparing technical interventions associated with different systems of psychotherapy for specific behavioral health problems,
- observing how therapists deal with specific critical incidents in treatment, and
- training for specific therapeutic interventions for behavioral health problems.
